SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY: I Samuel 16:14-23

PSALM OF THE WEEK: Psalm 84

HYMN OF THE DAY: #7 “When in Our Music God is Glorified” http://www.oremus.org/hymnal/w/w301.html or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aeGr-Pg0jQ

VERSE OF THE DAY: Now the spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit tormented him. 1 Samuel 16:14 NRSV

Saul (the king of Israel, not the apostle) didn’t do what was right.  God’s spirit left him.  When the Holy Spirit leaves, that leaves room for the other kind.  That’s what happened to Saul.  His only solace was in music, so he called the best one he had heard of, David son of Jesse, ironically the very person who had been anointed to succeed him, to come and play music for him.  That music would later be part of the Psalms.  By listening to music which glorified the Lord, Saul could fight off the demon torturing him.  It was spiritual food which sustained him in his darkness.  We too need to feed our spirit as well as our bodies.  In today’s society there is the tendency to over feed the body and under feed the soul.  There is also the tendency to use too much “junk food” for both.  What we put in our bodies and our minds affects our entire being.  While we hear about physical health problems daily, the spiritual health problems are even more serious.  We do not want to be like King Saul and fail God to the point that the Spirit leaves us.  We need to make sure that our lives, our words, our actions, and our daily walk with God, is always leading us toward God, not away from him.

PRAYER: O God whose Spirit abides in me, fill me with your Spirit, your Word, your Love, so that I may be drawn closer to you always. Amen.

See you in Church Sunday,

Pastor Sandy
