SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY: 2 Kings 2:1-12

PSALM OF THE WEEK: Psalm 34

HYMN OF THE DAY: CH#643 “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/s/w/swinglow.htm

VERSE OF THE DAY:  As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. 2 Kings 2:11 NRSV

How do you describe the indescribable? Elisha saw Elijah taken directly to heaven.  Even when people searched for his final resting place (see verses 16-18) they found no evidence of his grave or of his body.  “Horses and chariots of fire”, a “whirlwind”, the “Chariots of Israel and its horsemen”, are all phrases that try to describe this incredible moment when Elijah was taken up.  Sometimes when God works outside of our usual expected ways, we find ourselves at a loss to describe it.  Worldly words don’t do justice to spiritual experiences.  That is why sometimes the best description of all the miraculous saving love that the Lord showers upon us is simply the invitation to come join that journey and experience it for yourself.  Human words can’t describe God.  Experiencing God for yourself is the only language that works.

PRAYER: O God who is beyond human description, I cannot describe your wonder, power, or love, so help me not only experience it for myself, but also to share it to others in my life so they may know you too. Amen.

See you in Church Sunday,

Pastor Sandy
