SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY: Colossians 3:1-11

PSALM OF THE WEEK: Psalm 28

HYMN OF THE DAY: CH# 390 “Lord of Our Highest Love!” http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/l/h/i/lhighest.htm

VERSE OF THE DAY: Set you mind on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth.  Colossians 3:2 NRSV

Pollution (air, water, soil, noise, etc.) is often hard to clean up.  We have seen that very vividly in the Mid-Ohio Valley.  Mind pollution is probably the hardest to clean up.  Our minds are constantly being “polluted” by many of the things we are exposed to on a daily basis.  Our culture, from songs and books to television and movies, constantly tries to pollute our minds with thoughts that are contrary to what Jesus calls us to do.  Paul mentions several of these; fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, greed, (see verse 5), anger, wrath, malice, slander, abusive language (see verse 8), lying (see verse 9) and prejudice (see verse 11).  Such thoughts can tempt us away from Christ and Christ-like behavior without us even meaning to think them.  We do, however, have some control over our own minds.  We can choose when we are confronted with evil thoughts, to consciously think about what God would want us to do instead.  We are all human.  We all have thoughts we aren’t proud of.  We can “override” those thoughts with better ones.  Set your mind on God and heavenly things rather than concentrating on the things that would pull you away from God.

PRAYER: O Heavenly God; purge my mind of all selfish and evil thoughts and help me to focus on you and your way, rather than the ways of the world which keep bombarding my mind. Amen.

See you in Church Sunday,

Pastor Sandy
